What’s Driving Your Need to be Successful and Perfectionism?

Reims, Champagne Region, France, on a Road Trip in 2025.

High Achiever – here is the truth, most of us don’t realise until damage has been done.

So much of your drive, your perfectionism,

even your “success currency”, is often rooted in unexpressed anger.

Anger is more complex than the mainstream advice understands, or wishes to discuss.

It’s both a primary emotion – a raw survival response, your life energy.

When your system senses a threat, it mobilises you into action.

It’s also a secondary emotion, a mask over deeper hurt, shame or fear, often suppressed.

If you’ve lived through adversity, adverse childhood experiences, or complex trauma,

there is a good chance that you learned early that showing anger wasn’t safe.

You either swallowed it down to keep the peace, which is repression and suppression.

Exploded and got punished for your unacceptable outburst/behaviour.

Froze, holding the energy inside your body, which, like repression, is an unconscious process; it’s automatic.

Here’s the problem: suppressed anger doesn’t just go away.

It wires an already primed nervous system into higher levels of chronic tension.

You are already living in sympathetic dominance, using your cognition/intelligence to override your biology

and repressing/suppressing your anger, which you’ll believe is legitimate, adds to the list of things to manage.

Your brain and body are connected; your nervous system is sending signals to your brain, a point many mindset coaches and spiritual teachers fail to discuss. They will discuss fear and shame as issues with your mind, it’s your ego, which is partially correct. Everything is connected, and everything loops, reinforcing processes taking place in your body and brain without your knowledge.

When you are living in overdrive, sympathetic dominance, with anger, stress, frustration, anxiety, and insomnia issues, your nervous system is locked in fight/flight/freeze/fawn, which means it’s not the best time to eat and digest food, rest and heal, because that isn’t the primary goal of your system, which is to keep you alive. It wouldn’t be safe not to be hypervigilant and tensed up.

This is where your chosen mechanisms come in, the ways you found at some point in your life to ease the tension.

It shapes your identity – a high achiever who can’t switch off, can’t feel content, but keeps pushing anyway.

That’s why so many top performers in life look like they “have it all”, yet inside they feel restless and empty,

stuck, disconnected, from themselves, their loved ones, their business/career, and life.

The way out isn’t more control – It isn’t “just mindset” because yours helped you become successful.

And it definitely isn’t suppressing or pushing harder. The push comes, but it must be measured.

The way out is learning to:

Regulate your nervous system, teaching your body it’s safe to throttle back,

be open to and take on board new information, and implement it with awareness.

Integrate the parts of you you pushed away, unresolved anger, grief, and shame, which become destructive,

are a huge resource that can be used to create the life you want.

There is energy in emotion; emotions aren’t good or bad, too many suggest they are.

Like your parents probably did, emotions are usually misunderstood, not accepted as information.

Create your new identity, reintegrate your personality, and move from unhealthy to average to healthy.

This obviously depends on where you are currently,

based on the levels of stress and unresolved issues you’ve been living with.

When your autonomic nervous system, which is the foundation, can switch between branches – sympathetic and parasympathetic, which means find balance – homeostasis – and the emotional charge associated with your experiences in life has been discharged, you’ll stop dragging your history into your present.

Focusing on your vehicle, not as an afterthought, but as a fundamental that supports your ambition and sharpened edge, you cannot perform at your best, be productive, have great health and wellbeing, and enjoy life without this.

Spiritual growth, which is what you say it is, there is no manual. By doing the work discussed above, you naturally move out of the BY ME state and into the AS ME state. You’ll no longer need to control outcomes or situations; you’ll be capable of flowing with what’s in the moment, with presence, and make an informed decision.

It depends on your beliefs, which I’m saying will change. Everything is energy, everything is spiritual, including you.

This isn’t about getting rid of anger, reframing why you are stressed, or reliving experiences.

What we are talking about is transforming your experience into balance, calmness, peace, purpose, aliveness,

connection, contentment, and fulfilment, without losing your edge.

This is exactly the path I walked in 2014.

What does contentment look like in your model of the world?

If you look at my content, you can easily see what it means to me.
